The U.S. Army Register of Enlistments 1798-1914 records Edward F. Clarke, age 28 1/2, born in Rowan Co., Ky, enlisted 29 April 1901 in Ironton, Ohio, occupation lawyer, discharged June 14, 1901.

Herringshaw’s Encyclopedia of American Biography of the Nineteenth Century, Chicago, Ill, 1901, contains on p. 222 the paragraph “CLARKE, EDWARD FIELDING, lawyer, was born March 19, 1873 in Morehead, Ky. He studied law in his father’s office; was admitted to the bar in 1894, and practices his profession in his native city.”

His WW I draft registration card, filed 12 Sep 1918, records Edward Fielding Clark, age 45, residence 605 E. College St., Florence, Alabama, born 19 Mar 1873, occupation police, employer Air Nitrate Corp, Musels Shoal, Alabama, nearest relative Mary E. Clark, same address.

(This would be his fourth wife, Mary Emma Machin, with whom he was enumerated in Texas in the 1920 census.)

The California death index lists Edward Fielding Clarke, born 19 Mar 1873 in Kentucky, died 24 Apr 1948 in San Diego Co., father’s surname Clarke, mother’s maiden name Goodan.

1930 census of Jefferson Co., Kentucky, Louisville ward 6, enumerated 16 April, lists on p. 13B in a boarding house run by Mrs. Dee Simms:
Clark, E. F., roomer, 57, widowed, b. Ky Ky Ky, attorney in law practice. (There are 11 other adult boarders in the house, all listed as single or widowed.)

Her gravestone, photo on FindaGrave.com, says “Mother: Mabel Gray Abdill Smith 1888 - 1978”

Her obituary reported:

“Funeral services for Mrs. Mabel Gray Abdill Smith, 89, who died Tuesday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Abel Aragon with whom she resided, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday from Steed Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Robert Sawyer of the Trinity United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Mission Garden of Memories under the direction of Steel-Todd Funeral Home.

Mrs. Smith was born Dec. 13, 1888 in Cherry Box, Mo. and had resided in New Mexico for many years. She was educated in Oklahoma and spent several years working in a law office. She later moved to Clovis to be near her son, the late Wylmer Abdul. She was one of the organizers of the Senior Citizens Center of Clovis and served as its secretary for many years. She wrote a weekly column for the News-Journal and was the author of life stories about many of the senior citizens.

Survivors include seven grandchildren, Charles Abdill and Bill Abdill both of Clovis among them; and cousins from Hereford, Texas, Nellie and Glen Blue.

Pallbearers will be Richard Aragon, Richard Stanley, Artie McDowell, Tom Wier, J. H. Brown, B. F. Waldrop, W. R. Park. All senior citizens will be honorary bearers.”

Mabel submitted an article to the Plains Indians & Pioneers Historical Foundation, which runs the Plains Indians & Pioneers Museum in Woodward, Oklahoma, for a publication they produced in 1975 called “Woodward County Pioneer Families Before 1915”.

It was really the second of at least four marriages for Edward.

1920 census of Woodward Co., Oklahoma, Woodward township, enumerated 5 Jan, lists on p. 5A as family #98/108, at 406 Lyon Ave:
Grey, Jefferson Davis, 59, b. Missouri Maryland Missouri, augh insurance; Ella B., wife, 59, b. Missouri Kentucky Missouri; Mable Clark, dau, 31, widowed, b. Missouri Missouri Missouri, stenographer; Clarke, Spencer Gray, grandson, 8, b. Oklahoma Missouri Missouri (should be Ok Ky Mo.)

Mabel was not really widowed, but divorced.
