Notes for John Donathan Jr.
He was often referred to in Menifee Co. records as John Donathan Sr., to distinguish him from John W. Donathan born ca 1846, the son of his first cousin Elijah Donathan, since the two Johns were neighbors there. (The old convention for the use of Sr. and Jr., at least in the rural U.S., was to distinguish between the older and younger of two adults of the same name in the same community, regardless of relationship.) But I am following the modern convention of using those suffixes to indicate a father and son of the same name.
Census Notes for John & Hannah (Family)
1870 census of Menifee Co., Ky, Beaver precinct, Rock House P.O., enumerated 16 July, lists on p. 6 as family #35:
Donathan, John sen., 44, farmer; Hannah, 42; Elizabeth, 21; John W., 16; Eliza, 14; Sarah, 12, Nancy, 10; Lucinda, 8; Sam McKee, 6; Spence, Moses, 85, collier. All born in Kentucky.

1880 census of Menifee Co., Ky, Beaver precinct, enumerated 22 June, lists on p. 26 as family #148:
Donathan, John, 53, farming; Hanner, 49, wife; Sarah, 21, dau; Nancy, 19, dau; Lou, 17, dau; Sam, 15, son; Price, 12, son; Jane, 7, dau. All born Ky Ky Ky.

It is odd that Price, who is listed here as age 12, does not appear with the family in the 1870 census. And all the other children are listed as one year younger than implied by the 1870 census. It would be unusual to deflate the ages of four children by one year, and then inflate the age of the next child by three years. So perhaps Price was just missed by the 1870 census.
