Notes for James Henry Miller
His death certificate records James Miller, age 85 years 9 months 12 days, born 17 Sep 1840 in Ohio, died 30 June 1926 in Brush Creek township, widower, late wife Katherine Miller, father Jacob Miller, mother’s maiden name Sarah, both born in W.Va, cause of death pneumonia, informant Robert Miller, Otway, Ohio, burial in Hoffer Hill Cem.

Sarah was really his stepmother, not his mother, and he did not move to Scioto Co., Ohio until sometime between 1850 and 1860.
Notes for Catherine Ann McClanahan
Her death certificate records Catherine Miller, age 83, born 20 May 1843 in Ohio, died 20 May 1924 in Brush Creek township, Scioto Co., Ohio, married, wife of James Miller, father John McClanahan, mother’s maiden name Nancy Mitchell, both born in Ky, cause of death exhaustion, informant Robert Miller, Otway, O., burial in Hoffer Hill.

Her obituary reported “Catherine Ann Miller, wife of James Miller, was born in 1841 and died May 20, 1924, being 82 years of age at the time of death. She was the mother of 5 children, 4 of whom survive, one son, Jacob, having preceded her in death. Those who are left to mourn the loss of mother are Frank,, of Xenia, Ohio; Thomas of Columbus, and Robert of Hoffer Hill. One daughter Mrs. Geo. Purtee of Portsmouth. She was a member of the Hoffer Hill Baptish church near Otway for many years and proved a faithful, consistent Christian until her death.

Funeral was conducted from Hoffer Hill Church Thursday afternoon at 1 o’clock, C. T. Grant, pastor of Otway M. E. church officiating, and the Otway M. E. choir supplying the music.”

She was most likely born in between those two reported birth years, since she was recorded as age 8 in the 1850 census. I am skeptical of the May 20th birthday reported on her death certificate - it is the same as the day of death, and since the obituary suggests that her birthdate may have been unknown to her survivors, it may just indicate subtracting 83 from the death date. The 1900 census reported her birthdate as Aug 1842.
Census Notes for James Henry & Catherine Ann (Family)
1870 census of Adams Co., Ohio, Tiffin township, West Union P.O., enumerated 14 June, lists on p. 22 as family #172/179:
Miller, James, 28, farm laborer; Catharine, 26; Franklin, 10; Jacob E., 2; Thomas, 2/12, b. March. All born in Ohio.

1880 census of Scioto Co., Ohio, Brush Creek township, enumerated 7 June, lists on p. 13 as family #86/95:
Millar, James H., 38, farmer, b. Oh Oh Oh; Catharine, 35, wife, b. Oh Ky Ky; Franklin P., 18, son; Jacob Edward, 11, son; Thomas J., 9, son; Rosa Adaline, 1, dau. All children born Oh Oh Oh. McClanahan, Nancy, 80, mother-in-law, b. Ky Penn Va.

Judging by the 1870 census, the ages for the three boys are probably all low by one year. (The one for Thomas definitely is, which would push Jacob back as well.)

The preceding household is headed by James’ father Jacob Miller, and the one before that by his brother Robert.

1900 census of Scioto Co., Ohio, Brush Creek township, enumerated 5 June, lists on p. 4A as family #59/60:
Miller, James, 57, b. Sep 1842, Oh unknown Oh, farmer; Catharine A., wife, 57, b. Aug 1842, Oh Ky Ky, married 35 years; Robert L., son, 15, b. Oct 1884, Oh Oh Oh.

The number of children columns for Catharine were initially left blank, and then “corrected” to 1/1 in pencil. But that was probably just inferred by the presence of one child in the household. If the number of years married is correct, then it suggests that Franklin is the son of an earlier wife.

The next three households are also headed by Millers: Richard age 38, Peter age 36, and Robert L. age 54. (Robert is James’ brother. Richard and Peter are Robert’s sons.)

1910 census of Scioto Co., Ohio, Brush Creek township, enumerated 2 May, lists on p. 10B as family #209/206:
Moiller (or Mailler), James, 68, b. Oh Oh Oh, farmer; Katherine A., wife, 68, b. Oh Ky Ky, first marriage for both, married 43 years, mother of 4 children, 4 living; Charles, grandson, 11, b. Oh Oh Oh.

1920 census of Scioto Co., Ohio, Brush Creek township, enumerated 15 Jan, lists on p. 4B as family #82/92:
Miller, James, 77, b. Oh Oh Oh, retired farmer; Cathern A., wife, 77, b. Oh Ky Ky.

The following household is headed by their youngest son Robert. The household after that is headed by Mary J. Miller, widow of James’ brother Robert.
