Notes for Commodore & Cassandra Ann (Family)

Census
1900 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Farmers precinct, enumerated 27 June, lists on p. 23B as family #405/410:
Heflin, Commodore, 41, b. June 1858, day laborer; Annie, wife, 41, b. June 1858, married 17 years, mother of 7 children, 5 living; Mary L., dau, 17, b. July 1882; Thomas, son, 14, b. Jan 1886; Ida, dau, 12, b. Jan 1888; Mahala, dau, 5, b. June 1894; Wallace, son, 3, b. June 1896. All born Ky Ky Ky.

Since they were married in October 1882, the birthdate for Mary is probably off by a year. (None of the dates are very trustworthy.3)

1910 census of Rowan Co., Farmers precinct, enumerated 29 April, lists on p. 13B as family #227/234:
Heflin, Commodore, 52, farmer; Cassie, wife, 52, washerwoman, first marriage for both, married 28 years; Lizzie, dau, 25, single; Wallace, son, 14. Nichols, Ida, dau, 19, married 5 years; John, grandson, 3; Mary E., granddau, 3/12. All born Ky Ky Ky.

(The “number of children” columns are blank for both Cassie and Ida.) Lizzie is presumably the daughter listed as Mary L. age 17 in 1900.

I cannot find Cassie in the 1920 census. In 1930 she is living with their daughter Ida and her husband James Nichols, whom I also cannot find in 1920. So probably she was already living with them.

1930 census of Jay Co., Indiana, Richland township, Dunkirk ward 2, enumerated 10 April, lists on p. 14B as family #389/402, at 437 Lincoln Ave:
Nichols, James, 44, age at first marriage 24, laborer at glass factory; Ida M., wife, 39, age at first marriage 19, polish moulds at glass factory; Lucy C., dau, 17, carry in at glass factory; Hefflin, Cassey, mother-in-law, 74, widowed. All born Ky Ky Ky.
