County Coordinator

My name is Teri Pettit and I'm the County Coordinator. I also designed the official KYGenWeb logo in 1996, and I work as a software developer at Adobe Systems in San Jose, California.

I've never lived in Kentucky and rarely get to visit there, but my father, Medford Pettit, was born in Rowan County in 1927. Both of his parents and three of his grandparents were also born there (the other grandmother moved there as a child.) Most of his ancestors were resident in the county when it was formed from Morgan Co. in 1856, and before that in the part of Bath Co. that became Morgan Co. in 1823.

The Rowan County surnames in my ancestry are Clark, Cox, Downing, Hall, Jones, Martin, McClain, Myers, Pettit, Quesinberry, Riddle, Sexton and Slusher. Closely allied families include Alfrey, Baldridge, Black, Blair, Brown, Caudill, Cornett, Crose, Dehart, Fraley, Jennings, Lambert, Lewis, McBrayer, Pelfrey and Trent. I have over 15,450 people linked by relationship in my database of paternal relatives, of whom about half are in Rowan, Morgan, Bath or Elliott counties. (The remainder are mostly more distant ancestors or cousins in southwest Virginia.)

Visit my family page to download a GEDCOM file or browse through online family group charts.

How you can help

Contribute data

If you have any of the following kinds of text files that you would be willing to share, please contact Darlene Homme.

HTML files, or files that you would like to have converted to html, can be emailed as attachments to Teri Pettit.

Volunteer for Lookups

There are some resources which are difficult to access from outside Kentucky, either because they are not available on microfilm or because the microfilm series are so long (one or two years per film) that it would cost too much to order them.

If you have any books on Rowan County, or if you live near Morehead and can do lookups in the libraries and courthouse there, please send me email and I will add your name to the lookup volunteers section.
