Notes for Nicholas Frantz
Brethren histories, e.g., Lest We Forget by Rolland Flory, say that Nicholas had eight married daughters, and no sons.
Most of this family group is taken from Early Clark County Families, Vol. II, pages 117-118, entry submitted by Lela Shoup, according to which the family moved to Clark County in 1826. That entry gives Nicholas' birthdate as 5 May 1797, which is not consistent with his tombstone and obituary (nor with her own profile of Nicholas Frantz on p.8 of Annals of the Donnels Creek District.) Further details in ECCF, Vol. V, pages 162-163, entry submitted by Ken Crill. He gives Nicholas' place of death as Acme, Jackson Co., IN.
Lowell Beachler also lists a daughter Barbara who married a Swank, no other details. I am not entering this daughter without more info as to his source.
Nicholas' obituary, as well as Lela Shoup's Annals of the Donnels Creek District (p. 8) says that he was born in Augusta Co., VA, but we know from other sources that his parents were living in Botetourt Co. in the late 1700's. Most likely the obituary is mistaken, but it is possible that the family was visiting in Augusta Co. when he was born.
Cemetery Records of Pleasant & Paw Paw Townships, p. 6 lists Nicholas' tombstone inscription as died 30 Sept 1874 age 77-4-29.
Wabash County Will Book B, pages 96-98, contains will of Nicholas Frantz, dated 13 Oct 1870 and recorded 11 Nov 1874. It mentions by name only his wife Catherine Frantz, and two youngest daughters Pheba (who died 2 months after the will was written) and Mary. The remainder of the estate is to be divided among “all the other children and the heirs of those children who are deceased.” Executors are Isaac C. Cripe and John Frantz Jr., witnesses Joel Ohmart and Jacob Ulery. (John Frantz Jr. refers to John J. Frantz, son of John Frantz & Barbara Arnett.)
Census
The 1850 census of Pleasant twp, Wabash Co., IN, taken in August, lists this family (#153) as:
Nicholas Frantz 53 Farmer, Catherine 51, Anna 17, Rebecca 14, Mary 10, Phebe 6; Nicholas and Catherine born in VA, Anna, Rebecca, and Mary born in Ohio, Phebe born in Indiana.
Notes for Catherine Crist
Page 6 of Lester Binnie's Cemetery Records of Paw Paw and Pleasant Townships, Wabash Co., Indiana lists Catherine's tombstone inscription as died 18 Dec 1886 age 87-10-16.
