Notes for Peter Figart
When I talked with him in 1975, Walter Figert, the grandson of this immigrant Figert, mentioned as his aunts and uncles on the Figert side: John, Jacob, Elizabeth, Mary and Adam. He did not give any birthdates or even birth order.
Pearl (Grisso) Figert, the wife of Walter Figert, said in 1975 when I interviewed her on the family tree that Walter's grandfather was named John, and that his wife was Becky Frantz, the sister of John Grisso's wife Sally Frantz. However, no other records confirm this, and I now feel she was in error. For one thing, there is no record of any Rebecca or Becky Frantz born to Sally's father, Daniel Frantz. For another thing, the only Figert family in the 1840 and 1850 censuses of Tuscarawas County, Ohio with children which matches the list of names above is that of Peter Figert and Anna Marie Hermann.
The Kirchenbuch (1849-1890) of the German United Evangelical Lutheran and German Reformed Zions Congregation on the Upper Stone Creek, Jefferson twp, Tuscarawas Co., Ohio, p. 82, under deaths, lists Feigert, Peter, b. 18 Sep 1805, d. 25 Mar 1884, buried 27 Mar, age 78y 6m 20d. Copy of this document in the library of the Tuscarawas County Genealogical Society, New Philadelphia, Ohio. It is referred to in other notes as "Stone Creek Kirchenbuch."
Cemetery Book III published by the Tuscarawas County Genealogical Society lists on p. 32 in Stone Creek Cemetery, "Figert, Peter, 18 June 1805-25 Mar 1884." Note the discrepancy with his date of birth in church records.
Census
1840 Census of Tuscarawas Co., OH, Jefferson twp, lists on page 309:
Figart, Peter: males: 2 under 5, 1 20-30. females: 1 under 5, 1 20-30.
1850 Census, Jefferson twp, pages 119-120, taken Sept 26, lists as family #801:
Figart, Peter, 45 (farmer); Mary A., 37; Jacob, 14; Peter, 12; Mary, 9; Margaret, 7; John, 5; Catherine 3; Christian, 3; Charles, 1; Adam 1/12. Peter Sr., Mary, and Jacob are listed as born in Germany, and the others are listed as born in Ohio.
Since Walter's father Peter's birthdate is known to be 2 Oct 1838, and his uncle Jacob's is known to be 18 Sep 1836 (both dates from their gravestones), the match with the ages of Peter and Jacob above, as well as the appearance of Mary, John and Adam, is too close to be coincidental. (The place of birth for Jacob does not match that he gives as an adult in the Indiana censuses. However, if he was under 2 when the family immigrated, he may have grown up thinking he was born in Ohio.) Note that the daughter under 5 in the 1840 census is not living with the family in the 1850 census.
Notes for Anna Marie Hermann
Cemetery Book III published by the Tuscarawas County Genealogical Society lists on p. 32 in Stone Creek Cemetery, "Figert, Anna Mary, died 19 Feb 1872, age 58y 10m 5d." The birthdate of 15 Apr 1813 is inferred from the age at death, and is consistent with census readings.
