Notes for Preston J. D. Quesenberry
Cemetery Records of Carroll County, Virginia, p. 157, lists cemetery inscription for Preston Quesenberry with full dates of birth & death. Most of the birth and death dates for his children are from a family group sheet compiled by Mary Q. Kell, a granddaughter of Laura Quesenberry & George Lewis. She got her information mostly from family members who lived into the 1970's and 1980's. She writes "I remembers my great- grandfather Preston very well. He was too young to be in the Civil War but he could remember it. His father and four brothers were in the war. He told me he could recall when Stoneman's Army came through Carroll County. They burned some records at the court house and took food and animals from the farms and plantations. They came to Andrew and Abigail's place and took one of their horses but left a worn out horse there. One of their slaves took off with the Yankees too. But my grandfather laughed and said that the horse they left turned out to be better than the one they took after it was rested up. I don't know if Andrew had slaves before the war but he bought some during the war to help out on the farm since his sons were in service."
Mary Kell says that her grandmother Laura Q. Lewis, as well as Preston's youngest daughter Alma, both insisted Preston did not have a middle name. But in one census he is enumerated as Preston J. D., and that is how Kelly Webb (another grandson of Laura Q. Lewis) lists him.
