Census Notes for Frederick & Mary ("Polly") (Family)
1870 census of Floyd Co., Virginia, Indian Valley & Burks Form township, enumerated 31 Aug, lists on p. 37 as family #256/242:
Quesenberry, Frederick, 40, farmer; Polly, 38; Phillips, Caroline, 11; Jeff Davis, 9; Quesenberry, Thomas, 3; Walker, 1; Nestor, Nancy, 24, without occupation, deaf and dumb. All born in Virginia.
Caroline and Jeff Phillips are Polly’s children by her first marriage, to John Phillips. I assume Nancy Nestor is most likely Polly’s sister.
1880 census of Floyd Co., Virginia, Indian Valley district, enumerated 3 June, lists on p. 6 as family #39/40:
Quesenbery, Fred, 51, farmer; Mary, 46; Phillip, Jefferson, 19, stepson; Thomas, 13, son; Walker, 11, son; Ordela, 8, dau; Lutabba, 7, dau; Maritta, 4, dau; Alverty, 2, dau; Nester, Nancy, 34, boarder. All born Va/Va/Va.
There is no repetition of the surname Quesenberry after the line for Jefferson, which caused all of the Quesenberry children to be indexed as Phillips. But the words “Phillip” and “step” on that line are in darker heavier ink than the rest. It is clear than the enumerator first entered Jefferson as a son with the usual dash for a continued surname, and then overwrote the dash with Phillip, and prefixed son with step, and forgot to put Quesenberry on the line for Thomas.
