In 1880 Martha was recorded with her son George as Martha Lindsey, age 57, mother, married, but with no husband in the household.

1850 census of Carroll Co., Virginia, district 11, enumerated 2 Aug, lists on p. 25 as family #192:
John H. Marshall, 29, farmer, b. N.C.; Martha, 26, b. N.C.; George W., 1, b. Va; John W., 1/12, b. Va.
The birthdate of 1 month is inconsistent with other records for the baby John. Perhaps 10 months was misheard as 1 month?
The prededing household is headed by Barton Smith, who is married to John’s sister Polly. Also on the same page are families headed by his brothers Abraham, Thomas, and Jesse. This suggests that perhaps the five siblings are all living on land formerly owned by their parents (who are listed 9 pages back.) All four of the Marshall men are recorded as born in North Carolina, as well as their wives, and in all four cases, the birthplace for the wife should really be Virginia. Perhaps this census taker generally only asked the man of the household where he was born, and assumed the same for the wife.
