Census Notes for Charlotte Hylton
(I am entering these census notes under Charlotte since they include children from both her marriages.)
1850 census of Floyd Co., Virginia, western district, enumerated 18 Aug, lists on p. 95 as family #696:
Jackson Harris, 31, farmer; Charlott, 40; Sarah Harris, 7; Elijah, 6; Jackson, 10/12; Elizabeth Slusher, 22; Henry, 21; Susan, 18; Catherine, 16; Polly, 14; Samuel, 13; Eva, 11. Sarah and Elijah Harris and Samuel and Eva Slusher born in Indiana, all others in Floyd Co. (This enumerator listed counties for those born in Virginia.)
Notes for Stephen & Charlotte (Family)
Published Montgomery Co. marriage records list Stephen Slusher m. Charlotte Hylton on 21 Dec 1824, witness Archelaus Hylton. The Stephen Slusher bible has an entry "Stephen Slusher and Charlotte Hylton his wife entered into Wedlock on the 30th day of December in the year of our Lord 1824." Probably 21 Dec is a marriage bond date.
Stephen and Charlotte moved to Hendricks Co., Indiana around 1833, along with some members of the Huff and Hylton families. Some sources say that Stephen died there around 1841, others that Stephen and Charlotte divorced around 1840 and Stephen died in Indiana in 1865.
At any rate, Charlotte remarried in 1842 to Jackson Harris in Putnam Co. The family returned to Floyd Co., Virginia around 1845.
Both of their sons, Henry and Samuel, were officers in the 54th Virginia Infantry regiment.
