Census
1850 census of Morgan Co., Ky, lists family #814:
John Downing, 22; Nancy, 22; James, 3; Joseph, 1. All born in Ky.
1860 census of Shelby Co., Ky, Hardinsville, enumerated 21 June, lists on p. 65 as family #483/447:
Jno P. Douning, 33; Nancy, 33; James F., 14; Joseph M., 12; William T., 10; John P., 1. All born in Kentucky.
1870 census of Lafayette Co., Missouri, Freedom township, enumerated 1 July, lists on p. 55 as family #353/360:
Downing, John P., 43, b. Ky; Elisa, 25, b. Illinois; Thomas, 11, b. Ky; Jesse M., 8, b. Indiana; Harris, John, 10, b. Missouri; James, 7, b. Missouri; Downing, George, 1, b. Missouri.
The Harris boys are children of Eliza by a previous marriage.
The 1860 census shows no match for Thomas - I wonder if he is the same person as John and Nancy’s son John Dennis, born in 1859, who should be listed here. Either that or the age is wrong. If it is a misentry of 11 for 21, he could be named William Thomas. Or he might be really only 10, and have been born after the 1860 census was taken, although both these latter possibilities raise the question of what happened to John born 1859 in Ky, who was living in 1880.
The preceding household is that of John & Nancy’s oldest son James F.
