Notes for Franklin Duane Pettit
A biographical history of Kentucky by Wm. Perrin, in an article on Thomas S. Pettit, says "..he is a son of Franklin Duane and Elizabeth (Zook) Pettit. His father was born at Fredericksburg, Virginia, of French-born parents, his father, who was an ardent admirer of the Napolean, having fled to the United States after Napoleon's defeat, settling at Fredericksburg, where he was an educator, as he had been in France.
Franklin Duane Pettit as a young man went from his native town to Frankfort, Kentucky, where he met and married Elizabeth Zook, who was of Pennsylvania Dutch parentage. At Frankfort Franklin Duane Pettit and Thomas B. Stevenson became owners and publishers of the Kentucky Farmer. Mr. Pettit died rather early in life, and not long afterwards his wife also passed away, the subject of this sketch therefore being left an orphan when but a boy, being but ten years of age when his mother died."
(I can find no town named Fredericksburg in either Virginia or W.V., though there is one in Maryland. I rather doubt the French origin.)
Census
1830 census of Franklin Co., Ky, lists on p. 115, line 9, in Frankfort:
Franklin D. Pettit, 1 m 10-14, 1 m 20-29, 1 f 20-29. (Since Franklin and Elizabeth had only been married one year, and there is no evidence of a prior marriage, it is unlikely that the boy 10-14 is Franklin's son. They seem to have raised him, though, as it appears he is also with the family in 1840.)
1840 census of Franklin Co., Ky, lists on p. 323, line 15, in Frankfort:
F.D. Pettit, 1 m < 5, 1 m 5-9, 1 m 20-29, 1 m 30-39, 1 f < 5, 1 f 5-9, 1 f 30-39. (This is 3 lines down from the family of W.N. Pettit.)
