His obituary as printed in the Morehead News of Dec. 1, 1981, read “Leonard Pettit, 47, of 903 East Main Street, died Thursday, Nov. 26, [1981] at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Lexington after a brief illness. A native of Rowan County, he was the son of the late Frank and Nettie James Pettit. Before retiring, Mr. Pettit worked for the State Highway Department and the Point Express.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ruby Pettit; three sons, Robert Pettit, Morehead, Larry Pettit, Ashland, and Paul Michael Pettit, U.S. Air Force. A daughter, Dianna Pettit, Morehead; two brothers, Ewing Pettit, Morehead, and Russell Pettit, Hamilton, Ohio. Also two sisters, Mrs. Inez Sturgill, Morehead, and Mrs. Mildred Henry, Astor, Fla., and a grandchild.

Services were conducted Sunday, Nov. 29, at the Lane-Stucky-Back Funeral Home by the Rev. Leon Burton and the Rev. L. E. Colliver. Burial was in the New Sill Cemetery at Haldeman. Pallbearers were Dennis Crum, Buck Jones, Jerry Strunk, Charlie Harris, Ed Alderman, Bobby Stamper and Danny McKinney. Honorary pallbearers were Russell Fultz, Ott Roark, Woodrow Cecil, Larry Hamm, Winford Royse, Harlan James and Ted Pass II.”
