Census
I am not sure that I’ve found this family in the 1920 census. The following is the closest I can find:
1920 census of Scioto Co., Ohio, Wayne township, Portsmouth ward 4, enumerated 13 Jan, lists on p. 23B as family #453/523, in a houseboat on the Ohio River:
Kiger, Ernest, 34, b. WV WV WV, laborer Gencra Controls (sp?); Rena 21 b. Ind Ind Ind.
With the birthplaces for both not matching, and the age for Ernest being off by 10 years (it is very clear handwriting), it doesn’t at first seem like a very good fit.
Considering the Ohio birthplace of their daughter Delorice, though, this is probably them. The line above them is for a widowed Richard Lovell living alone born WV WV WV, and the family below them, which is the last on the page, are all born Ky Ky Ky. So I suspect what happened is that the census taker took rough notes in a notebook and then copied them onto the official forms later. (This was a very common practice.) In doing so, he may have accidentally copied the West Virginia line from Richard Lovell twice, thereby shifting the Ind Ind Ind that should have been for Ernest down onto Rena’s line, and mistaking her Ky Ky Ky line as being for part of the family below. He may have also made his letters less carefully in his rough notes, and misread his own 24 as 34.
1930 census of Muncie, Delaware Co., Indiana, Muncie ward 5, enumerated 15 April, lists on p. 16A as family #346/358, at 2520 S. Walnut St:
Kiger, Earnest, 34, age at first marriage 20, b. Ind Ind Ind, laborer at machine factory; Reada, wife, 31, age at first marriage 17, b. Ky Ky Ky; Delorice, dau, 10, b. Ohio Ind Ky; Norma, dau, 8, b. Ind Ind Ky; Dearel, son, 6, b. Ind Ind Ky; Patti, dau, 5, b. Ind Ind Ky; Donald, son, 2, b. Ind Ind Ky.
