The recorded date of birth is very inconsistent with the census records, which list him as age 9 born April 1891 in 1900, probably as age 17 in 1910 (I am unsure of the identification),

He is not listed with his parents in the 1910 census. He may be the John Pettit, age 17, born Ky Ky Ky, listed in Champaign Co., Illinois, Sadorus township, as an unrelated hired man, working as a farm hand with Pat J. Carey, age 32, and his sister Mary age 43, both from Ireland. The age is two years off from that implied by the 1900 census, but he gave his birthdate as 2 April 1893 on his WWII draft registration card, so the 1900 census might be wrong.
