Notes for Benjamin Franklin Pettit
The 1876 vital statistics report to the state auditor for Bath Co., Ky, lists Franklin Pettet, age 30, married, died 26 Aug 1876, cause of death “neomony” (which I assume is a creative spelling of pneumonia), born in Bath Co., parents Andrew & Christina Pettet.
Census
Possibly the Frank Pettet listed as age 22 (along with 2 other young boarders) with the Michael Farrish family in the 1870 census of Bath Co., Ky., Bethel precinct, dwelling #111. But if so, he is listed twice in 1870, as he appears as Franklin, age 23, with his parents.
Notes for Martha E. Hunt
Her death certificate records Mrs. Martha Collins, age 62, born March 1854 in Ky, died 12 Dec 1916 in Owingsville, Bath Co., Ky, widowed, father Jerry Hunt, mother’s maiden name Daily, both born in Ky, cause of death cancer of womb, informant John E. Snedegar, Salt Lick, Ky, burial in Old Virginia graveyard.
The parental information is most likely wrong. The only Jeremiah Hunt I can find of the right generation is the one who married Margaret Sapp, and their daughter Martha J. Hunt (5 Oct 1855 - 1 Apr 1934) married only once, to James S. Boyd. This Martha Hunt may be the daughter of Lewis Hunt and Amanda Dailey, who were married 11 Jan 1847 in Bath Co. Amanda died in 1856, and Lewis remarried to Martha Perkins. There is no daughter of the right age with Lewis and Martha in the 1860 census, but since any child born in 1855 would have been an infant when Amanda died, the baby Martha may have been fostered out.
Notes for Benjamin Franklin & Martha E. (Family)
Bath Co. marriage book 4, p. 82, records marriage of Franklin Petett and Martha J. Hunt on 10 Jan 1871, by Samuel Jones at his house, witnesses Rolin Burbridge and Richard Rolls.
Although this record gives J for Martha’s middle initial, the list of siblings in the obituary of Ben and Martha’s youngest son Benjamin Franklin Pettit Jr. matches the children of the Martha E. Hunt who married Peter Collins. (See Ben Jr’s notes for his obituary, and the census notes for Peter Collins and Martha E. Hunt.)
Census
I cannot find the children of this family in the 1880 census. Nor can I find Peter Collins, Martha’s second husband. This suggests that Martha and Peter were already married by June 1880, and the entire family was skipped for some reason.
