Notes for Amanda E. Sutphin
Her gravestone lists “Mandy E. Quesenberry, Nov 12, 1866 - Feb 18, 1902”. But Floyd County birth records21 list no female Sutphins born in 1866. In the records for 1867 there is an entry for Manda Sutphin, born 9-8, father Riley, mother Sarah. This could be the record of Amanda’s birth. A birthdate in late 1867 is also more consistent with the 1890 census reading, where she is listed as age 22 with Ananias, and the 1900 census, which explicitly lists her birthdate as Nov 1867.

However, survivors often get the deceased’s age/birth year wrong, but seldom make an error of more than one day in the day/month. This could represent a transcription error. The birth record immediately below that for Manda Sutphin is for a Josephine Sledd, also listed as born “9-8”. Perhaps either the original clerk or Marjorie Flour copied down the date for Josephine’s birth twice.

On the other hand, the 1870 census of Floyd Co. shows two Amanda Sutphins age 2. On p. 19 in Indian Valley is the one who is the daughter of Riley Sutphin, age 52 with wife Sarah age 35. And on p. 41, also in Indian Valley, is an Amanda J. E. Sutphin, daughter of Chapman Sutphin age 22 with wife Demaris age 23. The birth of the latter does not appear in the Floyd Co. birth records.

In 1880, the Riley Sutphin family had moved to Pulaski Co., where their daughter Manda was listed as age 12. Meanwhile, the Chapman Sutphin family was still in Floyd Co., now in Burks Fork precinct, where their daughter Mandy S. was listed as age 13.

This suggests that the Amanda Sutphin who married Ananias Quesenberry was more likely to be the one who was the daughter of Chapman and Demaris.
