The preceding household is James’ brother Thomas, age 34. The one before that is his father and stepmother Rebecca.
1880 census of Liberty township, Grundy Co., Missouri, enumerated 9 June, lists on p. 6 as family #1:

The presence of Elizabeth Downing in this household is what clued me in to Mary’s marriage to James Simpson (I did a search on all Downings in Grundy Co., Missouri).
The preceding household (the bottom family on page 5) is that of Mary’s sister Nancy with husband James Bailey, and their youngest sister Sarah. (This enumerator started over with household/family numbers of 1/1 at the top of every page.)
1900 census of Linn Co., Missouri, Jefferson township, enumerated 5 June, lists on p. 2A as family #28:
