She most often went by Jane rather than Millie. Her maiden name sometimes appears as Nester (since her mother was the widow of Jacob Nester when she was born), and sometimes as Phillips (since she was raised by her mother’s parents.)

1880 census of Carroll Co., Va, Pine Creek district, p. 153, lists as family #393/400:
Phillips, A. C., 63, farmer; Lucy, 63; Jane, 9, grandchild; William, 8, grandchild.

This is the family of Ambrose C. Phillips and Lucinda Jennings. Jane and William are, according to family tradition, children of Nannie Phillips and Caswell P. Montgomery, born out of wedlock after Nannie’s husband Jacob Nester died.
