Morgan Co. annual report of births to the Ky state auditor lists James S. Wells, born 28 Dec 1852 in Black Wather precinct, father John Wells, mother’s maiden name Martha Pierce.
His death certificate states James S. Wells, age 79 years 2 months 3 days, born 10 Apr 1853 in Ky, died 8 Oct 1930 in Menifee Co., Ky, father John Wells, mother’s maiden name Martha Pierce, cause of death Bright’s disease, informant Rinda Wells, Wellington, Ky, burial in Morrison Cemetery, Wellington, Ky.
Errors in reported age at death and year of birth are very common, since people get confused about their age and those of their parents as they get older, but usually the month and day are reported fairly accurately. Since it is possible that there was an error in the clerk’s report (they sometimes mistranscribed the reports from doctors and midwives when making the compilation), I would say that the evidence is inconclusive as to when his birthday was. But it was in 1852.
