Notes for Jeremiah Pettit
This Jeremiah Pettit is probably a brother or first cousin of our Matthew Pettit. The Westmoreland Co., Penn., company of the 8th Pennsylvania Regiment included a Jeremiah Pettit as well as our Mathew Pettit (both privates), and Mathew and Jeremiah were both listed on the same page of the 1810 census of Montgomery Co., Ky. But there is no pension record for Jeremiah. Probably he died before the pension program began (although he may have moved out of state), as he does not appear on any later censuses of Ky.
Census
This is probably the Jeremiah Pettit listed in the 1790 census of Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania, with 2 white males over 16, no males under 16, and 2 white females. (Allegheny Co. is the county containing Pittsburgh, which was in Westmoreland Co. at the time of the Revolutionary War.) There is no Jeremiah Pettit in that part of Pennsylvania in 1800 or 1810. Jeremiah was probably not old enough in 1790 to have a son over 16, so the other adult male may have been a brother, perhaps Matthew.
Taxable in Lincoln Co., Ky on 23 Aug 1800.
1810 census of Montgomery Co., KY, lists on p. 370:
Jeremiah Petett, 1 m over 45, 1 free non-white
This is the last record I have of Jeremiah. He most likely died before 1820. If he had any children who survived to adulthood, they had all established their own households by 1810.
