Notes for Lewis Riddle
Lewis swore an oath as 1st Lieutenant, Orange Co. VA Militia, on 24 Mar 1780 (Historical Register of Virginians in the Revolution, p.664).
He died intestate. His estate, inventoried on p. 330 of Will Book 3, Orange Co., VA, was listed as 1 negro man, valued at 35 pounds, and 1 "pare of waggon wheals" valued at 12 shillings. The inventory was not dated, but nearby entries were for February and March of 1795.
On page 341 of the same book is recorded the settlement of the account. The account settlement is dated "October 4th day 1794", but it is entered into the county books on "Monday the 26th day of October 1795". I believe the 1794 date to be an error, either by Sally or the clerk, as it is unlikely an administrator would wait a year after an estate sale to have it recorded, and the inventory apparently was taken in Feb or March of 1795.
