This is probably the Charles Pettit who died 19 Jan 1935 in Bath Co., listed on his Death Certificate (from KY Vital Statistics Dept, Vol. 1, #00094) as single, date of birth unknown, age 66 years, birthplace Kentucky, father Ben Pettit, "maiden name of mother: don't know", informant Jess Pettit of Salt Lick, cause of death tuberculosis of throat, burial in Jones Cemetery, Salt Lick.

The age at death, if correct, would imply a birthdate in 1868 (or Jan 69), which differs considerably from the 1874/75 date implied by Charlie's age of 5 in the 1880 census, but the informant Jess Pettit was obviously estimating, since he knew neither Charles' date of birth nor his mother's name. This Jess Pettit would not be our great-grandfather, as he never lived in Bath Co. Most likely he is the Jesse who is the son of Grant Pettit of Bath Co., which would make him Charles' nephew if this is the right Charles.
