Notes for Mary A. Caudill
There was an article about her in the Oct 4, 1996 issue of the Morehead News, which reads in part:
"On a late summer evening in Morehead, 21-year-old Mary Caudill (now Mercer) attended her first meeting of a service organization. Seventy-four years later, Mercer and the Order of the Eastern Star (OES) remain an inseparable team.
Mercer, 95, was recently homored by the Maxonic auxiliary for the time-tested association -- believed to be the longest continuous membership within the 128-year-old organization.
Mercer joined the order on Aug. 31, 1922. Eastern Star members must be the sister, wife or daughter of a Mason to be eligible to join. Her brother, Lindsay Caudill, was a Mason.
[Five paragraphs about the organization and the Morehead chapter omitted.]
The youngest in a family that included seven sons and three daughters, Mercer was born March 25, 1901, in the Wagner area of Rowan County to the late Samuel and Amanda Caudill.
She attended the Bratton Branch school, and went on to the old Normal School. Her eighth grade diploma was signed by education pioneer Cora Wilson Stewart.
After school, she went to work at the old People's Bank as a bookkeeper, where she remained until the mid-1940's. "Then I moved to Columbus, Ohio, and worked as a teller and bookkeeper there," she recalled.
Mercer attended an OES meeting in Columbus shortly after moving there, but said the members weren't like her chapter back home in Kentucky. "I'll be honest with you, I went to one meeting and didn't like it," she said. So she kept her membership in Morehead and maintained her association with the chapter, continuing to pay her dues and occasionally visiting with sisters and brothers of the order.
She attained the rank of Star Point Ruth within the chapter, and has received 25 and 50-year service pins.
At age 75, she became a first-time bride, marrying Herb Mercer, and they stayed together until his death five years later.
Mercer moved back to Morehead about four years ago, and says she plans to continue her membership with the order, recommending it to others."
The Kentucky death index lists Mary A. Mercer, age 98, died 5 July 1999 in Bath Co., residence Rowan Co.
