John is listed in the 1790 Census of Washington Co., PA. and on the 1793 tax list of Amwell Twp. He lived in Morris Twp., Greene Co., PA at the time of the 1800 census. He married and probably settled in the Miami Co., Ohio area. A John Pettit appears on the 1816 tax list for Miami Co., but not the 1810 tax list. In the 1820 census, he is listed as John Sr. John may also have had a son Henry.
