The mother’s given name is incorrect, but since Carmie’s mother died when she was five years old, her husband C. C. Carter would not have known her.

Carmie was raised by her mother’s parents. She appears with them in the 1900 census as Carmie Praither, granddau, 5, b. Jan 1895, and in the 1910 census as Carmin Prather, age 15, granddaughter, single.

1920 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Morehead precinct, enumerated 24 Jan, lists on p. 10B as family #79/82:
Prather, Carmer, 29, single, laundress; Norsey (sp?), son, 5; Allein, dau, 2. All born Ky Ky Ky.

The son listed as Norsey here is apparently the son listed as Osten Middleton born 30 Nov 1914 in the Kentucky birth index.

Rowan Co., Ky marriage book 7, p. 298, records the marriage on 1 Jan 1911 of James H. Middleton and Carmie Prather.
