Notes for Wallace Heflin
The 1900 census recorded him as age 3, born June 1896, and the 1910 census as age 4.
His WW I draft registration card, filed 5 June 1917 in Delaware Co., Indiana, records Wallace Heflin, age 22, residence 1306 S. Rochester, Muncie, born 7 June 1895 in Rowan Co., Kentucky, laborer, employer Ball Bros Glass Co., Muncie, Indiana, marital status divorced.
His WW II draft registration card, filed 25 Apr 1942, records Wallace Heflin, age 48, residence 164 S. Blaine, Muncie, Indiana, born 7 June 1893 in Farmers, Kentucky, nearest relative Hallie Wallace, 150 E. Fifth, Muncie, Ind, employer Ball Bros. (Hallie is his sister.)
The SSDI lists Wallace Heflin, born 7 June 1894, died Aug 1969, last residence Montclair, San Bernardino Co., California, SSN issued in Indiana before 1951.
The California death index lists Wallace Hefline, born 7 June 1894 in Kentucky, died 10 Aug 1969 in San Bernardino Co., mother’s maiden name Link.
Note that the records of his birth date cover the full range of years from 1893 through 1896. I am giving precedence to the June 1896 date from the 1900 census partly because earlier records tend to be more accurate, but mainly because it fits better with the birthdate of his sister Mahala. It is possible that it was 1895, but if so then Mahala’s would probably have to be pushed back from 1894 as well, because 12 months would be very tight birth spacing.
Census Notes for Wallace & Minnie (Family)
1920 census of Delaware Co., Indiana, Muncie ward 6, enumerated 8 Jan, lists on p. 8A as family #155/189, at 113 W. Eighth St:
Heflin, Wallace, 26, laborer at clay pot co; Minnie, wife, 22; Link, Simon, roomer, 45, married, cook at restaurant.
At the same street address but with their own family number are the family of Melvin Wallace and his wife Haley, who is Wallace Heflin’s sister. Wallace Heflin’s mother was Cassie Link, so Simon Peter Link is his uncle. Lucy Nichols Link’s brother James Nichols was also married to Wallace’s sister Ida.
I cannot find this family in the 1930 or 1940 censuses, although Wallace’s WW II draft registration suggests he was still living there in 1942.
