Census Notes for Mary Elizabeth McClain
1880 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Morehead precinct, lists as family #125:
Hammon, Mary, 22, widowed, keeping house; Mary A., 7; Lucinda, 5; Robt, 4; David, 1; McClane, John, 22, brother; McClane, James, 19; brother.
Mary is almost certainly the daughter of David McClain who was listed in the 1870 census as Elizabeth, 15, despite being listed as Mary, 22, in this one. John and James have to be the sons of David McClain and Lucy Riddle; there were no other brothers John and James McClain of those relative ages in the area. But the 1870 census did not list any "Mary" nor any sister closer in age than Elizabeth to John and James. Also, John's birth on 4 Dec 1857 is recorded in the Rowan Co. birth records, and if he had a twin sister she would undoubtably have been recorded at the same time. But there is no other child recorded as born to David and Lucy from 1856 through 1859. And David Hammon, James, John and (Mary) Elizabeth's stepbrother, is also listed as 15 in the 1870 census and 22 in the 1880 census.
