Notes for Francis M. “Frank” Hall
There is a group photograph of this family in Past Images of Rowan County
22. The caption gives names, but no dates.
Rowan Co. will book A, pages 264-266, contains will of Frank Hall, age 60, of Bangor, dated 5 July 1930, which gives to his four daughters, named as Emma who married William Bowling, Laura who married Witcher Bailey, Maggie who married Dewey Nickell, and Rebecca who married Roy Alfrey, $1 each and no more. To his two sons Floyd Hall and Johnie Hall, joint title to the farm known as the William Pierce place or the lower farm, bought from Harlan Powers, now occupied by son Floyd. To his two sons Troy Hall and Orbie Hall, joint title to the farm on which testatee now lives, known as the home place, title to transfer upon death of his wife Mollie Hall. Codicil dated 28 Apr 1934 provides that should son Johnie marry, and should he predecease his father, that no share of the estate go to any widow he might leave behind, but that his share would be divided among the remaining sons, and names as executor John Will Staton of Bertis, Menifee Co., Ky. Witnesses to the original will were J. D. Johnson and C. C. Crosthwaite, witnesses to the codicil were J. H. Campbell of Salt Lick and W. E. Proctor of Morehead.
The will was recorded for probate on 6 May 1940.
His death certificate (#2702) lists Frank Hall, age 70 years 8 mos 1 day, died 3 Jan 1940 in Morehead, Rowan Co., Ky, born 2 May 1869 in Menifee Co., Ky, occupation farmer, widowed, wife Mollie Hall, father John Hall born Ky, maiden name of mother unknown, cause of death tuberculosis, informant Troy Hall, Beartis, Ky, burial Clay Cemetery.
His gravestone also says that he was born 2 May 1869. And he was listed in the 1880 census (enumerated June) as age 11, which is consistent with that date. But he does not appear in the 1870 census (taken in July), when he would be 1 year old if he was really born in May 1869 or 2 months old if he was born in 1870. Ages in censuses (and in death records) are often wrong, but babies are seldom omitted from the family. Also he was listed in the 1900 census as age 26 born May 1874, and in the 1910 census as age 35, which are almost certainly wrong, but supportive of a younger age than that implied by the 1869 birthdate. (A 6 year old would not have been listed as 11, but a 9 year old might.) I therefore find it most likely that he was born in May of 1871.
Notes for Mollie Cox
Jackie Pottle writes in a post dated 26 June 2002 on the Rowan County Message Board at Rootsweb “Orbie Hall was my grandfather. <snip> Mollie Cox’s mother’s name was Rebecca, unsure of the last name. I do know that Rebecca married Mollie’s father-in-law John Hall after his first wife Amanda (Donahue) died. I found in one of the census listings (I can’t remember which year) that it was indicated that Mollie had been married twice, so perhaps Cox was her first married name. No one in the family was aware that she had been married before.”
Her death certificate states Mollie Hall, age 73 years 2 mos 4 days, died 12 July 1939 in McKenzie precinct, Rowan Co., Ky, born 8 May 1866 in Morgan Co., married, wife of Frank Hall, father’s name “don’t know”, maiden name of mother Beckie Cox, cause of death paralysis, informant Frank Hall, Burtis, Ky.
Her gravestone, however, has the birthdate 9 May 1867.
