John owned 136 acres of land on Pigeon Creek, Logan Co., Va.
Census
John B. Clark was on the Logan Co. Virginia tax list from 1824-1843.
1830 census of Logan Co., VA, lists:
1840 census of Logan Co., VA, district 32, lists on p. 16, line 5:
Jno B. Clark, males: 1 age 5 to 9, 2 age 15-19, 1 age 20-29, 1 age 40-49, 1 age 50-59; females: 1 age 5-9, 2 age 10-14, 1 age 50-59.
John would have been about 51. The male in his forties is probably Carter, who was not listed as a head of household in this census, and who was with the family in 1850. Indeed, most of the younger family members are probably Carter’s, since he had more known children than John. But since John was the elder by two years, and the 1840 censuses always put a single head-of-household for merged families, only John was listed by name.
1850 census of Logan Co., Virginia, district #32, lists as family #431:
John B. Clarke, 61, farmer; Mary, 60; Luemma, 25; George W., 25; Mary J., 5; Carter T., 59. All born in Virginia.
Carter is John’s brother. Luemma is George’s wife; she should have been listed after him instead of before. Mary J. is their daughter.
