Notes for Allie Young Sorrell
His WW I draft card records Allie Sorrell, age 30, born 9 Oct 1886 in Farmers, Kentucky, residence Freestone, Kentucky, occupation rock quarying, employer W. H. Daniels, Bluestone, Ky, married supporting a wife and three children.

His obituary in the Rowan County News of Thu, 9 Sep 1959 reads:

"A former Rowan County jailer, Allie Young Sorrell, passed away Sunday at age 71. He was one of the best known citizens of Rowan County and was often referred to as "the biggest man in these parts." Mr. Sorrell, an astute Democrat, weighed over 300 pounds and was jovial by nature.

He spent most of his life farming on Licking River, but was for several years custodian of the Morehead Stockyards.

Mr. Sorrell, son of the late Joe Henry Sorrell and Alice (Reede) Sorrell, was born at Farmers Oct 9, 1887. He lived all his life in the Farmers community.

He married Minnie Warren, who survives, along with three children, Mrs. Lennie Poston, Morehead; Mrs. Madeline Wescott, Farmers; and Herbert Sorrell, Dayton, Oh. Other survivors are 21 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Genny Livingood of Chicago; and two brothers, Boyd Sorrell and Frank Sorrell, Ft. Wayne, Ind.

Mr. Sorrell attended the Slaty Point Church. Funeral services were conducted yesterday afternoon at Slaty Point Church by Rev. Ivan Hinton with burial in the nearby church cemetery. Grandsons served as casket bearers. Lane Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Mr. Sorrell was sitting in his front yard when the end came, probably from a heart attack. He had been in apparent good health.”

The birthdate cited above, which also appears on his death certificate and gravestone, is inconsistent with the 1900 census, which lists him as age 9, born June 1890. Ages on censuses are often wrong, but it would be hard to fit his full siblings Genny and Bart between John H. and Allie if John was born in 1884 and Allie in 1887. The age for Allie on his marriage record (19 on 16 June 1908) is consistent with a birthdate in the second half of 1888 or the first half of 1889. So perhaps the truth is in between.
