Notes for John McClain Sr.
Tentative assignment as a son of Charles McClain and Comfort Sexton is based on the assumption that he is probably a brother of the Elizabeth McClain who was living with him and Polly in the 1860 census, and that I cannot find another Elizabeth who would fit in 1850 other than the one who was Charles and Comfort’s daughter.

I cannot find this family in the 1850 census.
1860 census of Morgan Co., Ky, lists two families in household #305, each with only one surviving parent:
John McClain, 35; John Jr., 13; Sarah, 10; Rosline, 4; Elizabeth, 1. Elizabeth McClain, 33; Thomas, 10; Daniel, 8; John, 4; Judy, 8/12.
From the birth record for Rosaline, this John is the one who married Polly Swinnea/Swinny. The LDS Ancestral File identifies the Elizabeth in this record with Elizabeth McClain, the daughter of Charles McClain, who was recorded with her parents in 1850 as age 21.
The only member of this family that I can identify in the 1870 census is Rosaline, who is recorded as a domestic servant with the Edmund B. Perry family. So it is possible that the family was striken by illness and many of them died before 1870. On the other hand, they may have moved out of state. With such common names, they would be difficult to identify.
