Do not confuse this family with that of John McClain and Polly Swinny, even though Polly is usually a nickname for Mary. Both of these John McClain families were listed in the 1860 Morgan Co. census, and the child names do not match, so it would not be the same family listed twice.

1860 census of Morgan Co., Ky, lists household #763 as:
John McClain, 30; Mary, 31; Elizabeth, 25; John, 12; George, 10; John, 10; Samuel, 8; Mary, 5; Fanny, 3.
This appears to be a combination of two families, considering the John age 12 and John age 10, but they are not separated into subgroups like two-family households usually are. One possibility is that Elizabeth is a widowed sister-in-law of John, and one of the two younger Johns is hers. Another possibility is that the two ten-year olds are twins, and that one of the two younger Johns is entered with the wrong name.
This household is next door to that of Charles McClain age 70. Most likely John is a son of Charles, but if so, his age may be slightly wrong, since Charles has daughters who were listed as 21 and 19 in 1850.
