In the 1850 census, he was listed age 14 in Morgan Co. household #264 with the family of Isaac Hardin Sr. (age 46) and Nancy Crose, but after the list of their children (which included Isaac Jr. age 3.) He is probably their nephew, as Isaac Sr. seems too young to be his grandfather.

The only other Hardin family nearby was that of Samuel Hardin age 48 with wife Leodica age 27 (Dicy Gregory, married 10 Mar 1849), in household #266. Possible siblings include Jackson Hardin, age 16, living in household #107 with the family of John Cassity and Elizabeth Brown, Amanda Hardin, age 19, living in household #256 with the family of Jameson Gregory and Henrietta Jones, and John Hardin, age 24, living in household #276 with Thomas Cassity and Amanda Smith.

One possibility is that the Samuel with wife Dicy is the same one who married Patsy Brown in 1825, and that Samuel’s children by his first wife were raised in other families after she died.

Her death certificate records Mary Jane Walsh, age 82 years 9 months 27 days, born 17 April 1854 in Kentucky, died 13 Feb 1937 in Morgan Co., Ky, widow of Gon Walsh, father Beverly McClain, mother’s maiden name Lyde Day, both born in Kentucky, cause of death terminal pneumonia, informant Harlan McClain, West Liberty, Ky, burial in Salyers Cemetery.

Morgan Co. marriage records list marriage of I. N. Hardin and Mary Jane McClain on 18 Jan 1880 in James H. Brown’s lane by Elijah Hicks, witnesses W. Taylor Henry & Josh McClain. (Marriage records in December and January are often off by a year; the marriage may have taken place in January 1879.)

1880 census of Morgan Co., Ky, West Liberty precinct, enumerated 4 June, lists on p. 8 as family #65:
Hardin, Isac, 39, farmer; Marry, 26, wife; Malindia, 16, relationship blank; Fairchild, James, 24, relationship blank. All born Ky Ky Ky.
