Attribution as a son of James Fraley and Luzanna Steagall is based on the fact that in the 1900 census of Carter Co. he is living next door to John W. Fraley and Thomas Fraley, and that in 1910 Martin and Minnie’s daughter Anna was living with that same John, listed as a niece. John W. and Thomas of Carter Co. are both listed by Fraley family researchers as sons of James and Luzanna.

Rowan Co. marriage book 3, p. 444, records the marriage on 12 Feb 1900 of Martin Fraley, age 25, second marriage, occupation laborer, to Mattie Clark, age 25, first marriage, both residing in Brinegar, Ky, Mattie's father born in Virginia, her mother in Kentucky. Bond surety by W. R. Dennis (whose wife was Anna Clark, daughter of Samuel F. Clark.)
The 1900 census lists her birthdate as Dec 1874, which matches that of Samuel F. Clark’s daughter Martha J. Clark, born according to the official birth report to the state auditor (compiled from records kept by doctors and midwives) as 3 Dec 1874. So apparently “Mattie” was a nickname for Martha.

Anna is the daughter of Martin and his first wife Minnie.
Neighboring families are #57 Thomas Fraley age 27 with wife Ellen age 25, and #58 John W. Fraley age 32 with wife Noea A. age 26.
I cannot find this family in any later census. Martin’s 14 year old daughter Anna by his first wife Minnie was living with Martin’s brother John. Most likely Martin died between 1900 and 1910, and Martha/Mattie lived with someone else, never remarrying.
