The Kentucky death index lists James R. Lewis, age 84, died 3 Aug 1969 in Rowan Co., residence same.

His gravestone must have been inscribed some time after his death, because it says James R. Lewis, 1885 - 1970.

Her death certificate records Lula Lewis, age 34 years 9 months, born 14 April 1890 in Ky, died 14 Jan 1925 in Rowan Co., Ky, married, father Billie Caudill, mother’s maiden name Lizzie Boggs, both born in Ky, cause of death tuberculosis of lungs, informant J. R. Lewis, Vale, Ky, burial in Ditney Cemetery.

Rowan Co. marriage book 6, p. 479, records marriage on 12 Nov 1908 of James Lewis, 23, s/o Isaac (b. Morgan Co.) & Rhoda Lewis, to Lulie Caudill, 18, d/o W. B. (b. Letcher Co.) & Lizzie (b. Carter Co.) Caudill, at Jessey Caudill's, by T. W. Rose, witnesses O. H. Harris and Jessey Caudill.

1910 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Hogtown precinct, enumerated 30 April, lists on p. 12A as family #190:
Louis, James R., 24, farmer; Lula C., wife, 20, first marriage for both, married 1 year, mother of 1 child, 1 living; Jesse C., son, 8/12. All born Ky Ky Ky.

This enumerator consistently spelled Lewis as Louis. The two preceding families are headed by brothers of James (Samuel and Enoch), and the four following families are headed by his parents and three other brothers (Jesse, John, and Thomas.)

1920 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Hogtown precint, enumerated 24 Jan, lists on p. 13A as family #235/238:
Lewis, J. R., farmer; Lula, wife, 29; Chester, son, 10; Arthur, son, 8; Eugene, son, 3 7/12; Ellener, dau, 1 7/12; Delmer, son, 1/12. All born Ky Ky Ky.

The 1930 census (see notes for James’ second marriage) and the Kentucky birth index both show Delmer as having a twin, Elmer, who appears to be missing here.
