Notes for Audrey Jane Skaggs
There is an article on the Robert Lee Carter family on p. 69 of the Elliott County History, submitted by his wife Audrey in 1992. (The book contains fairly extensive profiles of all of the descendants of Conley Trigg Carter. Their granddaughter Ramona A. Carter of Sandy Hook was one of the editors of the book, and apparently was energetic about soliciting articles from her siblings and cousins.)
Audrey refers to herself as “Audrey Jane Skaggs, daughter of Joe Skaggs and Ida Pennington, granddaughter of Abel Pennington and Dempt Reynolds of North Ruin and Henry Skaggs of Rowan Co.”
The census, the gravestones and the death certificates of Joseph and Ida use the spelling “Scaggs”, though. I’m sure that Audrey knew how she spelled her own name, but she may have picked a different spelling than her parents and siblings.
