This is not intended to represent a complete family group. They had nine children who lived long enough to appear in the censuses, but I am entering only the ones who married Pettits.

James and Sarah were first cousins. James’ mother was also named Sarah Darrough but called Sallie; she and Sarah’s father John Darrough were both children of James Darrough and his wife Margaret.

1870 census of Grant Co., Ky, Downingsville precinct, enumerated 18 Aug, lists on p. 15 as family #93:
Hedger, James, 40, farmer; Sarah J., 36; Cinderella, 17; George, 14; Nancy, 13; Margaret, 11; Jacob, 9; Ruby, 7; Mary B., 4; Lucinda, 1. All born in Ky.

1880 census of Grant Co., Ky, district 85, enumerated 24 June, lists on p. 8 as family #55:
Hedger, James, 51, farmer; Sarah J., wife, 47; Sinderilla, 27, dau; Maggie, 20, dau; Jacob, 18, son; Reuben, 15, son; Arabell, 13, dau; Lucinda, 10, dau; Ellen B., 8, dau; Jump, William, 17, hand. All born Ky Ky Ky.

The “son” Reuben should be a daughter Ruby; the daughter Arabell is listed as Mary Bell in other records.

The family of William Amos Pettit is four households above at #51, and at #50 is the family of James Thomas Pettit.

1900 census of Grant Co., Ky, Downingville precinct, enumerated 15 June, lists on p. 9B as family #158/162:
Hedger, James, 71, b. Mar 1829, farmer; Sarah J., wife, 68, b. Feb 1832, married 48 years, mother of 10 children, 5 lviing. Both born Ky Ky Ky.
