His father’s 1947 obituary listed him as a surviving son J. D. Smedley of Craney.

Her death certificate records Serena Belle Smedley, age 38, born 1880 in Elliott Co., Ky, died 28 May 1918 at Eastern State Hospital in Lexington, Fayette Co., Kentucky, length of stay 4 months 18 days (? see note below), married, father J. C. Williams, born in Virginia, mother’s maiden name Anne Oney, born in Elliott Co., Ky, cause of death chronic colitis, contributory cause insanity, informant E. S. H. records, burial in Ashland, Ky.

The years space for the length of stay field contains what looks like a tipped over A, possibly a crossed out 2 or partial 4. Since their son David was born in April 1917, it does not seem likely that she was in the hospital for over 2 years, so most likely this represents the clerk starting to put the 4 that should have gone in the months field in the years field and then crossing it out.

Rowan Co. marriage Book 4, p. 275, lists marriage on 29 Jun 1902 of Jefferson D. Smedley, 24, second marriage, farmer, residence Morehead, born in and father born in Rowan Co., to Serena Williams, 22, first marriage, residence Morehead, at the bride’s home on Dry Creek by James E. Stewart, witnesses James Waugh and Joseph Williams.

1910 census of Morgan Co., Ky, North Fork precinct, enumerated 23 April, lists on p. 5A as family #51/52:
Smedley, Jeff D., 32, 2nd marriage, laborer at log woods; Serena, wife, 31, first marriage, married 7 years, mother of 2 children, 2 living; Ada, dau, 12; Alfred, son, 6; Joe, son, 3. All born Ky Ky Ky.
