Her obituary in the Morehead News of Friday, Dec. 20, 1996 reported “Josie Grace Lewis, 85, of 314 Allen Ave., Morehead, died Tuesday, Dec. 7 [1996] at the St. Claire Medical Center after a long illness.
She was born May 31, 1911 in Morgan County to the late George S. Lewis and Leah Early Lewis. She was a retired schoolteacher having taught at the Cogswell one room school, the Campbell County School System and the Rowan County School System for a total of 43 years. She was a graduate of Morehead State University and a member of the Morehead First United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Retired Teacher's Association, the Homemakers Organization, the Farmers Rebekah Lodge and the American Legion Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Vaughn Lewis and Sam Lewis; three sisters, Flora Carter, Louise Hamilton and Mary Evelyn Pettit.
Surviving are one sister, Phoeba L. Butcher of Morehead; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were scheduled for Friday, Dec. 20 at 11 a.m. at the Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Powers officiating with burial at the Brown Cemetery. Special music by Randy Wells.
Pallbearers: Donald Wayne Carter, David M. Butcher, Joseph Pettit, Kenneth Pettit, Richard Thomas Hamilton, Vaughn Newton Lewis and George Lewis.”
