He was listed in the 1870 census as William age 7, and in the 1880 census as Jasper age 17, with a younger brother William age 2. So apparently his parents switched to calling him Jasper sometime between 1870 and 1878, and then reused the name William.
His death certificate records Jasper Brown, age 73, born in Elliott Co., Ky, died 8 Aug 1935 in Clayton, Elliott Co., Ky, marital status blank, father A. J. Brown, mother’s maiden name Melvina Adkins, both born in Elliott Co., cause of death paralysis, burial in Brown Cemetery.
(Elliott County was not formed until 1869, so the birthplace for Jasper and his parents refers to the part of Morgan Co. that was incorporated into Elliott Co.)
