She was listed as Nancy J. Pettitt in 1860, with her mother and her second husband John Crose, which is rather odd since her younger brother Bluford was listed as Bluford E. Crose. If it weren’t for the birth record, one might have inferred that she was born out of wedlock.
She is probably also the Nancy J. Elliott listed in the 1860 census as age 8 with her grandparents, Samuel S. Elliott and Frances Perry, and in the 1870 census with them as Nancy Elliott age 17.
She may also be the Nancy Elliott, age 45, b. Mar 1855, listed in the 1900 census as a boarder with the family of Samuel S. Lewis and his wife Rose Ella Brown.
