His birthplace was given as Kentucky on his marriage license and on the 1920 through 1940 censuses, but as West Virginia on the 1900 census when he was age 2. (I have not located him in the 1910 census.) It is consistent that as an adult, he believed he had been born in Kentucky, but his father reported otherwise when he was a toddler, so he may have grown up mistaken about where he was born.

His WW I draft registration card, filed 12 Sep 1918, records Charles Petitt, age 21, residence Holden, Logan Co., West Virginia, born 1 Sep 1897, occupation miner, employer Sand Creek Coal Company, Holden, Logan Co., WV, nearest relative Susie Petitt.

The SSDI lists Charles Petitt, born 1 Sep 1897, died April 1969, last residence Cleveland, Liberty Co., Texas, SSN issued in California.

The California death index lists Susie E. Petitt, born 28 Mar 1897 in West Virginia, died 18 Sep 1971 in Los Angeles Co., California.

Logan Co., West Virginia marriage register (index page 270) records the marriage on 28 Dec 1916 in Price Bottom of Chas Petitt, clerk, age 20, born in Ky, residence Mariba, W.Va., son of Sam Petitt and China Barton/Parton and Susie Moore, age 19, born in Dingus, W.Va., residence Barnabus, W.Va., daughter of Sherd Moore and Rhoda Moore, by Fielden Hall.

The maiden name for Charles’ mother China has a superimposed B and P. It appears that most likely the B was written first, and corrected to P, but it might be the other way around. (The two letters are the same ink and weight, but the P is written taller than one would expect it to be, as if to rise mostly above the top loop of the B, while the B is normal size and clearly connected in stroke to the a.)

1920 census of Logan Co., West Virginia, Holden, enumerated 29 Jan, lists on p. 35A as family #593/616:

1930 census of Logan Co., West Virginia, Logan precinct, enumerated 24 Apr, lists on p. 13A as family #593/616:
Petitt, Charles, 32, age at first marriage 19, b. Ky Ohio Va, mine laborer; Susan, wife, 33, age at first marriage 19, b. WVa WVa WVa; Maxwell, son, 12; Wanetta, dau, 11; Graham, son, 8; Douglas, son, 7; Dane, son, 5; Shirley A., dau, 4 4/12. All children born WVa Ky WVa.

Their son Roby Campbell, born 1928, is for some reason not listed.

Sometime before 1935 the family moved to southern California, where their youngest son Samuel was born in 1935.
