Morgan Co. Ky birth records list Harlan McClain born 30 April 1878, father James McClain, mother’s maiden name Catharine Fergueson.
All other records, including the 1900 census, give his month of birth as October. (He was also listed as age 1 in 1880, and if he were born in April 1878 he would have been two.) These annual birth reports to the state auditor were not made from registrations submitted at the time of birth; they were compiled during the spring of one year for all births during the previous calendar year, with midwives and doctors being required to submit reports at that time to the county clerk, kind of like tax returns are submitted in the spring for the previous year. The clerk most likely misread the doctor or midwife’s handwriting and interpreted Oct as Apr.
His WW I draft registration card, filed 12 Sep 1918, records Harlan McClain, age 40, residence Lenox, Morgan Co., Ky, born 31 Oct 1877, occupation farming, nearest relative Allie McClain, same address.
The SSDI lists Harlan McClain, born 31 Oct 1878, died Jan 1978, last residence Blaze, Morgan Co., Kentucky, last benefit paid to West Liberty, Morgan Co., Ky.
The Kentucky death index lists Harlan McClain, age 99, died 10 Jan 1878 in Morgan Co., residence same.
