Rowan Co. birth records list Jonah McDaniel, born 15 Feb 1858, to H. McDaniel and Nancy Cottle, residence Craney.
The 1860 and 1870 censuses both list his name as Uriah, though. He was probably named after Nancy’s father, Uriah Cottle. (It is very definitely Jonah on the birth register, but the clerk recording the births may have misread the handwriting of the midwife or other person who reported it to the county.)
