Notes for Thomas Allen Christian
Date of death is from his gravestone. I cannot find him in the Kentucky death records. His nephew Tobias Christian died the same day, of influenza. There was apparently an epidemic, as there are dozens of flu deaths recorded in Rowan Co. in October of 1918.
Census Notes for Nancy “Nannie” Bell Smith
She is probably the Nancy in this family, although the age is off by several years:
1880 census of Carter Co., Ky, lists as family #305/307:
Smith, Delila, 37, farmer, widowed; Henry C., 11, son; Mary, 8, dau; Nancy Bell, 7, dau. All listed as born Ky Va Va, although that would make the mother’s place of birth inconsistent for al the children.
In 1870 Delila was recorded in Carter Co. as Delila Smith, age 26, with the family of Isaac Zorns, and no children. So Henry is probably really younger than 11, and the daughters may be younger than their recorded ages as well.
Census Notes for Thomas Allen & Nancy “Nannie” Bell (Family)
1900 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Hoggtown precinct, enumerated 6 June, lists on p. 4B as family #72:
Christian, Thomas, 33, b. Sep 1866, farmer; Nannie B., wife, 22, b. Dec 1877, married 6 years, mother of 3 children, 1 living; Dan Mc, son, 3, b. Oct 1896; Smyth, Delila, mother, b. 1848, widowed, mother of 3 children, 3 living. All born Ky Ky Ky.
Delila is not Thomas’ mother, so she must be Nannie’s.
1910 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Morehead precinct, enumerated 14 May, lists on p. 19B as family #332/304:
Christian, T. A., 43, tunnel watch at rail road, first marriage for both, married 17 years; Nannie, wife, 35, mother of 2 children, 3 living; Daniel McK, son, 13; Ethel, dau, 5; Wiley A., son, 3. All born Ky Ky Ky.
There is no number of years married count after Nannie. Judging by the large gap between the births of Daniel and Ethel, and the strange number of children count, this may actually be a second marriage for Thomas.
1920 census of Carter Co., Ky, Upper Tygart precinct, enumerated 14 Jan, lists on p. 7A as family #114/117:
Christian, T. A., 53, farmer; Nanie, wife, 45; Dan, son, 23; Ethel, dau, 15; Alen, son, 12; Lillie, dau, 9. All born Ky Ky Ky.
