(In scrolling through the microfilms of 1940’s newspapers, it was interesting to observe that in 1943 notices of the deaths of local servicemen were being reported in multi-column articles displayed prominently on the front page, as this one was, while by 1945 they were relegated to brief single-paragraph notices.
