His death certificate records Thomas Evans, age 72, born 23 Feb 1861 in Elliott Co., Ky, died 13 Mar 1933 in Martinsburg precinct, Elliott Co., Kentucky, married, farmer, father Wilson Evans, born in Elliott Co., Ky, mother’s maiden name Patsy Cantrill, born in Johnson Co., Ky, cause of death Bright’s disease, informant Mary Lee Evans, Sandy Hook, Ky, burial in Ruin, Ky.
The 1900 census also recorded his birth date as Feb 1861. The date from the birth record is not necessarily more accurate, although usually it is. But these annual birth reports from the 1850’s through 1870’s in Kentucky were not registered at the time of the birth; they were collected from reports submitted to the county clerks by doctors and midwives during Jan through March of the following year of all the births they had attended during the preceding calendar year, and oftentimes the doctors and midwives either kept poor notes, or the county clerks misread their handwriting.
