Notes for James Edward Clarke
So far as I know there is no relationship between James Edward Clarke and my Clark line. But we are distantly connected through the Ingram side.
A biographical sketch of Rowan County citizens says that he was born in Nicholas County, but his parents were married in Bath Co. in 1837, and are listed in the 1840 census of Bath Co., so I suspect that the birthplace may be in error.

Dates of birth and death are from her gravestone.
Be careful not to confuse her with Mary J. Goodan of nearly the same age (17 Oct 1839 - 16 Dec 1919), daughter of Samuel Goodan (1814-1903) and Susan Wells (1821-1909) of Bath County. That Mary never married, and was recorded with her parents in Owingsville in the 1870, 1880 and 1900 censuses.

Clark, James, 32, lawyer; Mary, 30; Jennie, 7; Luly, 5; Harry (or Harvy), 3; Iona, 1; Oxley, Maxey (male), 10; Philip, 8; Osborne, Rachel, 10. All born in Ky.
The Oxley boys are sons of Mary from her first marriage. I do not know the relationship of Rachel Osborne.
1880 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Morehead precinct, enumerated 1 June, lists on p. 4 as family #25/26:
Clark, James E., 42, lawyer; Mary, 39, wife; Jennie B., 17, dau; Loulie L., dau; Harvy B., 13, son; Jona (or Iona) D., 11, dau; Rebecca S., 9, dau; Edward F., 7, son; Catharine, 4, dau; Elizabeth, 2, dau. All born Ky Ky Ky.

Clarke, James E., 62, b. Apr 1838, lawyer; Mary, wife, 60, b. Oct 1839, married 39 years, mother of 8 children, 6 living; Kate, dau, 24, b. Aug 1875; Oxley, Flossie, granddau, 13, b. June 1886. All born Ky Ky Ky.
Flossie is most likely a daughter of one of Mary’s two sons from her first marriage, Max Oxley and Philip Oxley. If so, that would make her a step granddaughter to James.
